A journalist reports, writes, photographs, and then delivers news of recent or past events whether it be on newspaper, on TV, or online to their audience. Graphic journalism delivers art as well as text to go along to take part in sharing a story. Graphic journalism delivers comic art as the visual. There are many forms of comics to choose from, for example, a comic strip, graphic novel, visual narrative, or manga, just to name a few. The comic form depends solemnly on what type of message, or story a person is going to explain or show in art. The sequential art takes a huge role in delivering images to a comic that will then help that comic tell the story or narrative within images being used. An independent combination is when both images and text are both used hand-in hand to deliver a message (McCloud).
What does one think of when they hear the word comics? Fiction, right? Anything that is created with imagination, and anything that is in fact not true. Whereas, non-fiction is anything that is true, this type of writing is informative because it explains a true story, biography, or commentary. Authors face the challenge of delivering their message in their own way to an audience. For example, if I am going to use a form of comic such as a manga but use it to deliver a real story then it will be tricky. I say this because fiction is used for manga’s. If I wanted to deliver a true story, then a journalist memoir will fit perfectly with my message to come across to others who will know that this story they will read is true.
“Pyongyang: A Journey in North Korea, “by Guy Delisle, is about his own two months journey to Pyongyang, North Korea. Being a foreigner at a different part of the world does come with ups as well as downs throughout that journey. Delisle’s delivered a powerful travelogue medium as he documented his own experience of a nation that is indeed secretive. His choice of comic form went great with his story and art. Ultimately, the choice of comic form depends on what the author is trying to say, whereas a fiction, or non-fiction story. That is all folks!
